O'Callaghan's debut novel, The Beautiful City, was published in 1996. The novel received critical acclaim and was shortlisted for the Orange Prize for Fiction. She has since published several other novels, including The Baby Farm (2000), The Lady in the Tower (2004), and The Killing Season (2010).
